VOCZero's
Distribution Terminal Line DTL™
Vacuum Regenerated Activated Carbon VAC™
VOCZero provides a range of Vapor Recovery Units (VRUs) for the recovery of volatile organic compounds from vapors at medium to high concentrations.
The process is based on the well-proven adsorption technology using activated carbon and the vacuum regeneration of the activated carbon. This technology has proven to be one of the best solutions for applications such as storage terminals and truck, railcar, barge, and ship loading operations.
The design and selection of components are carried out to achieve a durable, safe, and efficient processing facility and are based on internationally recognized standards in the oil and gas industry, including ASME VIII, ASME B31.3, EN 60079, and EN 1127.
Typical vapors to be treated:
- Gasoline
- Diesel
- E5-E100 Gasohol (Ethanol)
- Methanol
- Benzene
- Toluene
- Xylene
- MTBE
- ETBE

PROCESS DESCRIPTION
The process is based on the separation of gases using activated carbon. A mixture of air and hydrocarbon vapor is directed into a carbon filter where the hydrocarbons are retained by adsorption on the carbon surface, while clean air is vented to the atmosphere. Our filters use VZ DuraVOC™, a specially selected, durable, and safe activated carbon.
Typically, after a period of 10 to 15 minutes, the carbon becomes saturated with hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon emissions begin to increase slightly. A hydrocarbon analyzer in the vent detects this and the control system switches the filter into regeneration mode.
A vacuum is applied to the filter, extracting the recovered VOC vapor from the carbon. The stripped hydrocarbon vapor is then directed to an absorption column where the hydrocarbon is condensed into a gasoline stream or a similar product available at the terminal. While one filter is being regenerated, the other filter continues to receive the air and hydrocarbon vapor mixture.
OPTIMIZED VACUUM SYSTEMS
As standard, the vacuum system in the DTL™ Series VRUs consists of rotary vane vacuum pumps, which offer the lowest energy consumption among vacuum pump technologies. Upstream of the vacuum pumps, Roots blowers are installed as boosters. Roots blowers are characterized by their ability to handle high vapor volumes efficiently within a relatively moderate pressure range.
In DTL™ VRUs, the Roots blowers evacuate VOC vapor from the activated carbon at pressures ranging from 50 to 200 hPa. At 200 hPa, the VOC vapor volume is approximately half of that at 100 hPa. This means that a vacuum pump operating at 200 hPa requires only half the vapor handling capacity compared to one operating at 100 hPa.
